I am challenging myself in saying that I am going to get a five on the ap exam... since I dont want to be a liar, I better stop typing and go study cause this stuff is hard!!

WOW!!!

So i was shopping in Shamburg Illinios this weekend for prom dresses... Kathy Erickson was purchasing her beautifully fabulous prom dress when she asked the cashier what the sales tax was there... she said it was 8.75%!!! thats way up from our 5% and way way up from minnesotas 0%!! She said it was raised because of a city tax! Is this price discrimination, or just a random higher tax? Woodfield Mall (which we were at) and Guarnee Mills are both 8.75%! Does anyone know the reason for this insane tax, cause i cant understand how it varies that much!

The increase definately could be raised because of a city tax. Cities and counties can throw on an additional % if they really want to. For one example, Milwakee and surrounding counties have a slightly more inflated sales tax than our 5.5% simply to fund Miller Park. Same with Green Bay and Lambeau Field.

I don't see a problem in adding an extra .1% or so to fund something if it really helps, but I don't know what's going on in Illinois that they would need that high of a tax...

wow... sounds like kathy was ripped off on the tax!! she should have just gone down the road to goodwill, because they have the best deals with a lower tax.

That really seems insane, with a 8.75% tax, but obviously they can get away with it because people drive from hours away (like Fort) just to go shopping there, so they do not think a higher tax will stop anyone. They also probably have some construction going on because illnois always has construction!

That is a huge percentage! I guess places like Woodfield and Gurnee being so urban, the city tax might help pay for the support of excess traffic in the area. It still seems a bit ridiculous though.

Wow, you call her prom dress beautifully fabulous and she says she hates you...you must really be bestest friends forever. ha!

Get this - in the city of Chicago (limits of the city) it's over 10% right now. Crazy!

I lived in Milwaukee when they put the Miller Park cripple...er...tax on us. There was a lot of fighting over that. I'm assuming it's similar in IL.

Also, Schaumburg lies half in Cook County (Chicago rates) and half in...another county. If you were in the part that's in Cook County, they have to hike the rate to cover the county tax. Cook County has been in the red for years on their budget, if I'm remembering correctly.

In other words, you paid so much because the crime rate in Chicago is so high. Nice, hey?

I'm guessing that it might be this way for all big cities. Depending on the city, they can raise the tax % wayy up because lots of people shop there. Is the tax % really high in NYC?? or LA?

"AMERICA AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL!" You'll hear that when the Olympics comes to Chicago in a few years...why do you think you paid so much? Because they have to fun that silly!! And they need money for all the wounded victims that can't afford health care in Cobb county...or maybe the road damage all the Escalades are doing to the Chicago roads...I really hope you and Kate took a sedan down there...

I think that it's weird that there's such a high tax there, but at Mall of America, which is obviously a much bigger mall, there is no sales tax on clothing. I think we should try to get no tax on clothes everywhere, since they're a necessity of life!

But anyway, Maybe the tax is because you're in the chicago area and it has to do with the fact that there's more options and more people buying stuff, and the states see big $$$

Yeah its rediculous how many projects are going on in big cities. There is ALWAYS construction going on there, not like how we think we're always under construction in fort, even more. Some tax dollars have to go into that, either for subsidies for for funding. Roadways might also be included, even though there is a toll. There is just a lot of shit in chicago, and with shit comes taxes!
